Call ahead to reserve gear so your guaranteed a good time. On the morning of your adventure, pick up your gear, maps, sunscreen or an extra water bottle at our shop in downtown McCarthy and you’re off! Wearing your own sturdy hiking boots, you’ll have fun walking through the historic Kennecott Copper Corporation mill site on your two-mile approach to the Root Glacier. At the glacier’s edge, you’ll find it’s easy to strap on your crampons and walk onto the ice. Take as long (or a short a time) as you like.

Explore rivers, caves, blue pools and other features on the Root Glacier affordably, at your own pace.

Recommended Schedule
8:00 am: Pick up your rentals (bikes, crampons, poles) at our shop in downtown McCarthy.
9:00 am: Bike 4 miles or hop on the shuttle up to Kennicott.
9:30 am – 11:00 am: 2-mile hike through Kennecott and along the Root Glacier trail.
11:00 am – 5:00 pm: Glacier exploration; hike at your own pace with lots of breaks for photos, lunch.
6:00 pm: Hop on that shuttle again or bike down the wagon road just in time to return your rentals and grab a cold beverage, hot meal, or swim at the local watering hole.
