Climb / Ski Mount Bear

Overview

Climb or Ski Mount Bear, one of the 20 highest peaks in the United States and best known for it’s steep profile and impressive lines. Mount Bear is rarely visited; in part because it’s located far from the road system deep in the St. Elias Range. As the crow flys, Mt. Bear’s summit lies only four miles west of the Yukon border. Surrounded by an expansive white room of glaciated terrain, the Barnard Glacier flows from its southwest slopes, while the Klutlan Glacier lies to the north.

Skiers descend Mount Bear, May 2012.

Surrounded by significant peaks including Mount Bona, Mount Luciana, and second highest in North America Mount Logan, Bear is a large peak even in relative terms. For example, the drop from the summit to the Barnard Glacier is 8,000 ft (2,440 m) in less than 5 miles (8 km), and 10,000 ft (3,050 m) in less than 12 miles (19.3 km).

In addition to climbing, Mount Bear also offers excellent ski mountaineering opportunities. The mountain offers many routes to the summit, and some climbers even choose to traverse its entire summit ridge.
