Skiers descend Mount Bear with Mount Bona – tallest visible peak – in the background.

Mount Bona was first climbed in July of 1930 from the Russell Glacier, which lies to the west of the mountain. It was named by Luigi Amedeo, Duke of the Abruzzi, while he was completing the first ascent of Mount Sant Elias in 1897. The established route is the East Ridge, from which climbers often also reach the summit of Mount Churchill.

Bona is considered a “walk up” climb which means it’s also a good objective for intermediate or advanced ski mountaineers. Climbers/skiers establish three camps en route. From high camp on Bona, Bona and Churchill summits can be completed in one full day each. Churchill is also a “walk up” however it does have a slightly more technical alpine climbing section.

We recommend a twelve day itinerary for the Bona or Bona-Churchill combo climb. The major determining factor that decides whether a team summits one or both peaks is a teams’ collective athleticism and rate of travel. If climbers/skiers move quickly and confidently, both Bona and Churchill can be done comfortably within that twelve day window. A slower-moving team may take all twelve days to finish Bona alone.

Skiers descend Mount Bona, returning to their high camp after a successful summit under bluebird skies.

As with all Wild Alpine expeditions, the itinerary for your attempt on Mount Bona can be customized to your goals. Our climbing, skiing and ski mountaineering adventures accommodate any length of stay and originate in most Alaskan towns.

We suggest a 14-day itinerary for climbing or skiing Mount Bona:

Day 1: Arrive in Anchorage at Ted Stephen’s International Airport (ANC), stay at a hotel of your choice.
Day 2: Meet your guide, gear check, travel to Chitina or McCarthy for your backcountry flight, fly directly onto the mountain or set up camp and stay overnight.
Day 3: If you’re not there by now, you’ll fly to Mount Blackburn this day. Once settled in to basecamp; you’ll review glacier travel skills then get busy climbing and/or skiing your brains out.
Day 4 – 11: Climb, ski, explore Mount Blackburn and/or sub peaks in the surrounding area returning to basecamp on Day 11.
Day 12: Fly from basecamp to Chitina or McCarthy, return by ground shuttle to Anchorage. Some people like to fly out this day; we recommend staying in a hotel this night to rest up for your flight and to account for any weather delays.
