On the morning of your trip, meet your private climbing guide at a designated location in Anchorage or Girdwood and head for the terrain in our company van. While you’re on the road to the ice, enjoy an insider’s scenic tour of Turnagain Arm, the Portage Valley, the Chugach Mountains where countless snowy peaks frame the scene in every direction.

At the venue, get outfitted with plastic mountaineering boots, crampons, climbing harness, and helmet before heading out to the frozen seeps. Spend the rest of the day learning to climb on blue alpine ice. Immerse yourself in Alaska’s stunning coastal mountains exploring frozen waterfalls and ancient glacial ice, honing new skills throughout the day.

In one full day (6-8 hours), Intro to Winter Ice Climbing offers a solid introduction to the sport of high alpine climbing plus the natural history of Alaska’s wild landscape.

Develop and Review Skills
• Climbing knots and efficient rope-handling techniques
• Crampon and ice-axe techniques for snow and ice
