Yes! Alaska’s Department of Transportation has been improving the McCarthy Road significantly throughout the past few summer seasons. While conditions are still variable, and we advise that you call ahead for the latest road report, the chances of getting to McCarthy from Chitina in a 2-wheel drive sedan such as a Toyota Camry without incident in summer, are getting better all the time!
With that said, guests should remember that
the road is 60 miles of dirt and can take anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours to complete. Cell phone reception is spotty, and knowing how to change a tire is a good idea before you embark on the journey. Check the rules/regulations about traveling unimproved roads with your car rental company before driving the McCarthy Road. Some companies do not allow it.
