Do I need to take an avalanche course?

Yes and No! You do not have to take an avalanche course to participate in Wild Alpine adventures and training. However, we highly recommend you take one if you plan on traveling in avalanche terrain with us or on your own.

Travel in avalanche terrain can be dangerous. To reduce your risk of having an accident you need to be able to assess and manage your risk. Avalanche courses are specifically designed for backcountry recreationists who need to make travel decisions in avalanche terrain.

For those living or traveling extensively in Alaska, we recommend the Alaska Avalanche School. Their staff of local pros teach to your needs and the unique characteristics of Alaska’s mountains. For those in the lower 48 we recommend the American Institute for

Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE). They offer courses throughout the mountain states and specialize in interpreting local forecasts.
