Overview

Fly-in Intro to Summer Ice Climbing in Alaska – Technical Clinic combines the skills-based instructional training of our classic Intro course with the added adventure of a flightseeing tour and backcountry landing. Your pilot focuses on giving you a world-class tour while your guide focuses on teaching you basic climbing language, equipment design and use and technical climbing skills. This training is for you if you want to be out there climbing on your own (but need a “leg up” to get started) and if you’re looking for a little extra “something” to make this trip memorable.

Glacier in Summer

You’ll meet your guide at the Wild Alpine shop in downtown McCarthy, get outfitted with gear, then head to the airstrip to meet your private pilot and bush plane. On the other side of your 15-20 minute super-scenic flight, you’ll walk along the glacial moraine and then on top of the glacier the spend the rest of the day exploring ice caves, blue pools, waterfalls and moulins (holes drilled into the glacial ice by meltwater) as you hone skills in venues offering a variety of technical challenges.

The venue for Fly-in Intro to Ice Climbing in Alaska – Technical Clinic is typically the Kennicott or Nizina Glaciers, deep in the heart of the Wrangell-St Elias National Park & Preserve. Accessible via McCarthy and Kennicott, the best and most affordable backcountry novice and intermediate climbs are a 15-20 minute flight away.

In one full day (6-8 hours) this course gives you a strong foundation that you can use to advance to the next level of technical alpine climbing.

Develop and Review Skills
• Climbing knots and efficient rope-handling techniques
• Crampon and ice-ax techniques for snow, ice and mixed terrain
• Belay skills in a variety of mountaineering systems (rope-team, running belay, etc)
• Snow and ice anchors
• Route finding through crevassed terrain

Itinerary

As with all Wild Alpine adventures, the itinerary for your trip in the Kennecott Valley is entirely unique and customized to your goals.

Recommended Schedule
8:00 am: Meet your guide at the Wild Alpine shop in downtown McCarthy

8:00 am – 8:30 am: Get outfitted with climbing gear: boots, crampons, harness and helmet

9:00 am: Meet your pilot at the airstrip for your backcountry flightseeing tour and drop-off

9:30am – 5pm: Backcountry exploration and ice climbing

6:00 pm: Return to McCarthy and transfer to your hotel
